In the 1960s when cross strait conflicts were magnified and situation between China and Taiwan were tensed, Zhaishan Tunnel 翟山坑道 located southeast of Gugang lake served as a military base for Kinmen.
Zhaishan tunnel features a unique A-shaped waterway and several barracks as a base for concealing small naval vessels when Kinmen was at war.
However, after all the turmoil, Zhaishan tunnel was mercilessly forgottened and abandoned when there exist financial and manpower constraints which could be directed for better use.
Hope is not lost! When officials in Kinmen decided for Kinmen to live and tell its story after enduring such a tumultuous period by means of “show and tell”. Preservation of national heritage instantly became of upmost importance to commemorate those who fought and sacrifice for Kinmen as well as the possibility of Kinmen becoming the main attraction for its tourism industry.
Zhaishan tunnel is currently living its retirement life basking in the attention of visitors there for a visit.
