Located within Sun Moon Lake, Yuchi Township, Nantou County, Taiwan lies the Ci En Pagoda 慈恩塔 which late president Chiang Kai Shek commissioned in 1971 to commemorate his late mother.
Ci En pagoda is a south facing, 9 storeyed octagonal structure at a height of 46 metres and at an altitude of 954 metres. One might wonder why did late Mr Chiang commissioned such a structure to be built atop the mountain as it is an arduous project with the materials having to be shipped across the lake and god knows how to be ferried up the mountains but think again, Mr Chiang probably did so to let his late mother oversee his achievements thus far.
With pure white fences around the pagoda, cherry red tiles sitting comfortably on the roof and adorned with gold walls creating an impeccably gorgeous structure especially against the clear blue skies, sunsets and sunrise, it is truly a sight beyond imagination.
Plum blossom trees and variety of flowers line the sides of the 700 metres long trail providing shade and scenery while hiking towards the pagoda. Should one be lucky, a visit during April-May might earn a unique experience with the fireflies dancing in the darkness like little stars or in spring where plum trees blossom with an entire sea of white flowers.
Ci En pagoda is a very imposing landmark which people should not miss should they visit Sun Moon Lake.
